Ruth Hedges is the CEO of Unismart Capital Software Inc. As the creator and key architect of the Funding Roadmap online licensable platform, Ms. Hedges has been responsible for pioneering a new and innovative virtual system for business planning and due diligence reporting on the cloud.

Ms. Hedges has worked from the beginning with the principles of Startup Exemption to promote Crowdfund investing and to help get the Jobs Act bills passed. These bills contain provisions for expanding the parameters of crowdfunding. Unismart Capital Software has created the first standardized crowdfunding reporting system on the cloud ( Ms. Hedges is also a Founding board member of the Governance committee for The Crowdfunding Professional Association Organizing (CFPA) and also a Founding Board member of CrowdFund Intermediary Regulatory Advocates (CFIRA). Ms. Hedges is a council member of the Crowdfunding Accreditation for Platform Standards (CAPS) program which is an initiative by to promote the adoption of best practices for the operation of crowdfunding platforms globally.

Previously, Ms. Hedges was featured in the Chronicle of Philanthropy as well as the New York Times, the LA times and People magazine for her work with Oxfam America and the Hollywood Hunger Banquets. She was featured on ABC's Home Show, and the Financial News Network produced a two-part series on Ms. Hedges for their show "American Entrepreneur". She was invited to fill a cabinet seat on the Second Century Campaign board which raised over 16 million dollars to build the new Union Rescue Mission. She is the recipient of the Certificate of Appreciation from the City of Los Angeles for that work.

Ms. Hedges was also honored with an award from the late Mayor Tom Bradley for her work with feeding the homeless of the City of Los Angeles. In 2000 Ms. Hedges started and developed an incubation company in Pasadena California helping dot-com companies properly structure their operations, write business plans, and raise venture capital. Her lifelong entrepreneurial experience was a resource many companies needed. Helping those companies became the inspiration for the idea behind the Funding Roadmap.

Peter Shankman

An author, entrepreneur, speaker, and worldwide connector, Peter is recognized worldwide for radically new ways of thinking about Social Media, PR, marketing, advertising, and customer service.

Peter is best known for founding Help A Reporter Out, (HARO) which in under a year became the de-facto standard for thousands of journalists looking for sources on deadline, offering them more than 200,000 sources around the world looking to be quoted in the media. HARO is currently the largest free source repository in the world, sending out over 1,500 queries from worldwide media each week. HARO’s tagline, “Everyone is an Expert at Something”, proves over and over again to be true, as thousands of new members join at each week. In June of 2010, less than two years after Peter started HARO in his apartment, it was acquired by Vocus, Inc. Peter is now Vice President and Small Business Evangelist for Vocus, working out of New York City.

Alix Shaer, Passionate Fundraiser and Former National Director, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, American Cancer Society

Alix spent nearly 20 years directing and raising money for the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk which has raised nearly 1/2 billion dollars and attracted 8 million participants nationwide. As national director, Alix doubled the event's annual revenue and net income margin in five years and increased the number of events by 200%.

Previous to her work in the fight against breast cancer, Alix raised money for multiple other events and non-profits and worked at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. While not pounding the pavement raising money, she has hosted cable shows and done motivational speaking. She’s been lauded for her contagious passion and never-give-up attitude, believing that if you feel strongly about a cause, you can inspire others to support it.

Alix is a native of Massachusetts, a Tulane University graduate and lives in California with her husband and son.

Jed Cohen, Founder & COO

Jed is a Founder, and the Chief Operating Officer, of, one of the world’s largest and most successful crowdfunding platforms. He regularly speaks at events across the nation, educating people on the fundamentals of running a successful crowdfunding campaign. In May 2012, Jed co-authored a whitepaper, entitled Regulation of Crowdfunding: Building On the Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act, which has received acclaim from both the SEC and FINRA. However, Jed’s professional career began (at the age of eight) when he took to the stage as an actor and singer. During his twenty-year career as a performer, Jed toured both nationally and internationally as a boy soprano, made his Broadway debut (at the age of fifteen) in the Tony Award winning musical The Secret Garden, and is featured as “Rod McCalister” in the hit movies Home Alone and Home Alone II: Lost in New York.

Jed is a graduate of Harvard University where he earned his degree in Astronomy & Astrophysics. He completed original research identifying optical counterparts to gamma-ray bursts, and mapping NGC4258 in neutral-Hydrogen. He lives in New York City with his wife Kate, son Zeke, and little dog Sophie.

Candace Klein, Founder & CEO Bad Girl Ventures and SoMoLend

Bad Girl Ventures ( is a non-profit organization that focuses on educating and investing in woman-owned startup companies. In its first year of operations, BGV has received over 400 applicants, has educated over 250 businesses, has financed 26 women with $700,000, and has created 156 jobs across Ohio. SoMoLend ( is a new technology platform that connects business borrowers seeking loans with lenders looking to make a return on investment.

Candace has six years of lobbying experience, with the Northern Kentucky Chamber and United Way and four years of legal experience. Candace continues to practice as an attorney with Ulmer & Berne LLP with a focus on corporate matters, business advocacy and government relations for startup companies and small business clients. Candace is also the chair of CFIRA, the crowdfunding industry task force that works directly with the SEC and FINRA to set industry standards.

Candace led the Communities Practice at Property Advisors, with the title of "Maven" and the job description, "run and think." She is actively committed to her neighborhood, Over the Rhine, where she lives and has based both of her businesses.

Candace is a 2008 graduate of Salmon P. Chase College of Law where she earned her J.D. She also received her bachelor degrees from Northern Kentucky University.

Sherwood Neiss, Co-founder at Crowdfund Capital Advisors

Sherwood Neiss, CfPA Board. Sherwood is a co-founder of Crowdfund Capital Advisors (CCA). He is a 3-time INC500 winner whose company won E&Y’s Entrepreneur of the Year. As a serial entrepreneur and investor during the credit crunch Sherwood saw a need for a change in outdated securities laws and did something about it—as a co-founding member of Startup Exemption, Sherwood co-authored the Crowdfunding Framework used in the JOBS Act that was signed into law by President Obama on April 5, 2012. CCA advises angel groups, venture capital, private equity, investment banks and hedge funds on understanding how to profit in this new market. Marla Tabaka, founder of Make It Happen, Inc.

Marla Tabaka, founder of Make It Happen, Inc. business coach, and Inc. Magazine author works with entrepreneurs who are ready to grow their revenues to the million dollar mark and beyond. Bruce is a 30-year financial services career sales executive. Prior to co-founding CTC he held the position of President & CEO of Old Mutual Investment Partners, charged with the distribution of the firms affiliate manager mutual funds and separately managed accounts. He also held the same positions at Sentinel Investments and Gartmore Global Investors, the former asset management division of Nationwide Insurance.

Douglas S. Ellenoff, Member of Ellenoff Grossman & Schole LLP

Mr. Ellenoff and the rest of the corporate department distinguish themselves from many other transactional lawyers on the basis of their ability to be part of the establishment of new securities programs, like PIPEs, SPACs, Registered Directs, Reverse Mergers and CrowdFunding, where the Firm's professionals have played leadership roles within each of those industries, assisting in the creation, formation and strategies relating to those financings, as well as working closely with the regulatory agencies; including the SEC and FINRA; and the listing exchanges - AMEX and NASDAQ. Jason Best is a Co-Founder of Startup Exemption and brings over 10 years of executive management experience at 2 SaaS healthcare businesses (one of which he co-founded) in the bay area. His work there included starting a business from the ground-up during the dot com crash, building broad coalitions of US medical societies in support of Internet-based physician-patient communication and changing FDA regulations to enable physicians to receive electronic medication and device warnings instead of paper. This change dramatically increases patient safety while reducing time and costs for physicians and the pharmaceutical industry.

Vincent Molinari, Founder and CEO of GATE Technologies

Rodney Sampson, Chairman at Legacy Opportunity Fund

Rodney Sampson is a social innovator, serial entrepreneur, investor, author and consecrated bishop. Via his Episcopal affiliations with The International Bishop's Conference and Kingdom Manifestation, Sampson shapes innovative economic policy & definitive causes throughout society & culture.

Scott Purcell, Arctic Island, LLC

Mr. Purcell has considerable experience in both the securities and internet industries. In 1988 he founded a trust company that managed fixed income instruments for institutional investors, which he sold to a regional bank. Mr. Purcell also started a bond trading desk, a clearing firm for institutional investors, and published a book "The Guide to Fixed Income Investing". In 1994 he founded Epoch Networks, one of the world's first ISP's, and raised over $60 million in venture capital. As an initial Board member of the Commercial Internet eXchange (CIX), he often represented the nascent industry before Congress and the FCC. In 1999 Mr. Purcell founded OnAir Networks, raised over $40 million in venture capital and built the first music storage, streaming and downloading services for Sony and Universal. Since selling OnAir in 2001, Mr. Purcell has started several ventures, including a search engine wholesale business, a family tree and journaling website, and a niche social network. Gary Milkwick, Vice President of 1800Accountant

Gary Milkwick is currently Vice President at 1800Accountant, a tax preparation and consulting firm based in New York City that serves thousands of small business owners.  Gary previously worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he performed work for several Fortune 500 clients.  He also worked at a regional accounting firm in Atlanta, GA that provides tax and consulting services to small business owners.
